Eye of a St Louis web designer

How's this for a birds eye view of a cardinal's nest built right outside my kitchen window. The mother has been sitting on the nest for about a week now and get food visits from the dad to be...he feeds her baby style.

Last year we had a robin's nest in the same place and it was fun to watch the babies being fed. I will post more pictures as these new St Louis cardinal babies hatch.

Is it me or have we had a long winter this year? I am more than ready for spring.
Here is a little burst of fabulous designer spring color from my garden: evidence that winter is over. As a web & graphic designer color can be a great inspiration, I love the contrast of purple and green in this photograph.

Eye of a St Louis Web Designer

We were treated to a fabulous "spring like" day yesterday
but are plunged back to the depths of winter today. It will be a few more weeks before we see this sort of color in St Louis. This photograph was taken by my Mum, of a wonerful spring conatiner currently in bloom in her garden..in the UK.

"Business contact manager has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Don't you just hate it when you computer goes wrong. I have had my fair share of computer glitches already this year. Maybe I am getting them all over and done with in January and the rest of the year will be plain sailing.

Yesterday I upgraded my version of Quick Books resulting in a complete melt down of Outlook. It would not open and every time I tried I was greeted with the message.

"Business contact manager has encountered a problem and needs to close"

It has taken me 5 hours to sort this problem out but only thanks to an excellent post I found on Google Anwsers

I was so thankful for the advice I thought it worthy of a link just in case anyone else is encountering the same problem. St Louis web designer tip of the day!

I moved my creative juices from the computer to the kitchen today, to decorate a traditional British Christmas cake. While the icing on this cake is no where near professional standards it was fun to do!

How appropriate is this photograph for my Eye of a St Louis Web Designer Category

It has nothing what so ever to do with web design but if you know where it is in St Louis post a comment and I will let you know if you are right.

It seems to be taking a long time to cool down here in St Louis this year ..but today we have a taster of those beautiful days of fall.

This photograph was taken at Shaw Nature Reserve, and although the draught of summer has had a profound effect on the praries, there are still a few flowers ..and plently of beautiful grasses for the eye of the St Louis web designer.

The shapes and colors found in nature are inspirational to all types of designers, interior designers, graphic designers, web designers, logo designers ...

I love this photograph of a Star fish taken some 1782 miles from St Louis on the Oregon coast. The photograph has a fantastic color palette.

I used Google Maps distance calculator to work out the distance.

St Louis Web Designer - tip of the week

Ok this has nothing what so ever to do with designing web sites but a is a tip for all those St Louis gardeners battling with deer infested gardens. This is a nugget of gold found online and provides a very cost effective way of protecting your plants from " deer digestion" Many web designers I know are very keen gardens so I felt I should share

Ingredients:-

2 eggs
1 cup of skimmed milk
1 cup of water
2 tablespoons of dish detergent

Put all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Pour mixture into a old "409" type spray bottle. Spray all the plants in your garden that the deer like to eat.

The deer are repelled by the smell of rotting eggs... but I have been unable to detect much of a odor. It is cost effective and bio-degradable.

I whip up a batch of this a week and it does the trick

One of my favorite places to visit in and around St Louis is the Shaw Nature Reserve, 30 miles west of Downtown St. Louis. It is a 2,500-acre nature reserve with tracts of tall grass prairie, glades, wetlands, savannas and woodlands near the Meramec River.
Last week the Wildflower wilderness had a fabulous display of cone flowers.

I suspect that they must not be part of a "Deer Diet" to grow in such abundance and think I might try growing them in my garden ... gardening is my down time from web designing!

Eye of a St Louis Web Designer

As a web designer I spend a lot of time at my desk "creating" Sometimes it is nice to have a little distraction to let those creative juices flow or just rest the eyes. While my office window offers a great view, an unsual item on my desk is currently acting as my "eye rest"

It is an ant habitat, and watching these industrious little creatures is amazing. In three days they have done this much tunneling!

As a graphic and web designer inspiration comes from many avenues. I love the combination of earth tone colors in this photograph recently taken during a winter vacation in the UK. The grass does not stay green in St Louis over the winter months but the damp mild conditions in Wales results in lush green landscape year round.

Designing a web site is a technical process. What is created must have form and function and get the user to where they want to go.

Look at the design of the train wheel at the St Louis musuem of transportation! Every element of that design is about giving the train function

I recently went to the wonderful Missouri Botanical Garden here in St Louis. It is always an inspirational visit for a St Louis web designer.

As beautiful as all the flowers and foliage were, the glass sculptures of Dale Chihuly took center stage. The garden currently features a custom-designed exhibition which is dramatically installed within the natural landscapes.

As a web and graphic designer my eyes are my ultimate tools and never take a break.
This can be a good thing especially when ambling around my garden in flip flops taking photographs yesterday. I was about to stand in my compost heap to get a better angle for my photograph when I spotted Missouri's most dreaded snake, the copperhead, neatly coiled on top.

Get inspiration with "designer" welsh air

You've heard of designer clothes, designer watches ..now how about designer AIR

Apparently there is someone in Wales (UK) selling air from the welsh valleys to Expats longing to breathe a little freshness! .. at 24 pounds per bottle

Next time I need a little inspiration for my web designs and graphic creations maybe I should order a bottle of my home country Welsh mountain air!

How can the air from such fantastic countryside not be invigorating!

As a web designer and a graphic designer an understanding of human visual perception is important. The use of a contrasting color to draw the users eye to a particular area is a simple example of how we can make use of the perception of contrast

However human perception is not always as straight forward! Take these 2 examples

The St Louis Arch

The Arch is as high as it is wide ..get a ruler out and measure it if you don't believe me!

Then how about this

Do you see movement? Well there is none ..this is a completely static illustration!

As I have said before my design eye never sleeps. As a designer of websites an important aspect of the creation is to produce a design that draws the user to where we want them to go.

Nature is the same..where do you think this flower wants it's visitors to go?
